Meet Preety Kaur

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in California. My private practice is grounded in depth-oriented, trauma-informed care.

I help clients reconnect with themselves and discover that they are their own greatest resource. Drawing on my extensive long-term training in Internal Family Systems (IFS), I help bring attention to the parts of a person that are often pushed away or avoided—such as anxious, lonely, self-critical, or procrastinating parts—and meet them with curiosity and care. Many clients are surprised to feel instant relief and ease as they notice these parts are not enemies, but caring, protective aspects ready to be relied on. Therapy becomes a space to access that inner support, cultivate self-compassion, and move forward with clarity and confidence.

I continuously train in Internal Family Systems (IFS), trauma healing, and culturally responsive care, so I can tailor my approach to fit each client’s unique needs. These trainings help me bring the right tools—whether mindfulness, DBT skills, attachment work, or somatic techniques—into our sessions to support growth, resilience, and self-understanding.

My Path to Becoming a Therapist

Before becoming a therapist, I spent several years working in Silicon Valley at Apple and The David and Lucile Packard Foundation in program and project management. That fast-paced environment gave me firsthand insight into the stress, burnout, and perfectionism that high-achieving spaces can create.

My career has also been rooted in service and equity. I’ve led young adults at City Year, supported survivors of trafficking through Freedom House, and served as a Crisis Counselor for Santa Clara County. Along the way, I learned to meet people with humility and heart, especially during times of transition or adversity.

These experiences deeply shape how I show up as a therapist—with both empathy and practical strategy.

Since becoming a licensed therapist, I’ve worked in diverse clinical settings, including schools, jails, and nonprofit organizations, giving me a broad understanding of human challenges and resilience.

An Asian American Perspective

As an Asian American therapist, I understand firsthand how cultural values, family expectations, and identity can deeply shape our emotional lives. Whether it's the pressure to achieve, the challenge of expressing vulnerability in families where that wasn’t modeled, or the feeling of being pulled between multiple worlds—I see and honor those experiences.

For many clients, especially first- or second-generation individuals, therapy can be a space to unpack the unspoken: intergenerational tension, guilt, silence, or the drive to succeed at the cost of wellbeing. I work with clients to gently explore those layers with care, compassion, and cultural awareness—bridging where you come from with where you want to go.

Outside the Therapy Room

When I’m not in session, you’ll often find me hiking Bay Area trails with my dog, recharging by the ocean, or exploring new books and podcasts about psychology and culture. I value curiosity, connection, and balance—values that shape how I show up as both a therapist and a person.
